IMG_1245“Take this medicine with healthy food.” Our HIV positive clients hear that a lot from their doctors and for some, that is a tough prescription. Trying to subsist on less than $1,000 a month means cutting corners wherever possible including at the grocery store. Cheaper food often comes with fewer health benefits. It will also exacerbate the nausea, incontinence, and even wasting that can occur with the virus and its treatments. This is where our Keep It Fresh food voucher program saves the day. Qualified clients receive supermarket vouchers – up to $100 per month – to purchase healthy foods that work well with HIV/AIDS medications. Along with each food voucher the client receives nutritional counseling and meal planning.

Alliance for Housing and Healing is deeply grateful to the Sidney Stern Memorial Trust for its longstanding support of our programs including Keep It Fresh. Thanks to their grants, our clients are eating healthy foods and following doctors’ orders.
