The Patrick Rush Service Award seeks to remove the financial barrier for students who demonstrate the drive and determination to reach their education goals despite the challenges that are presented by a positive HIV status and on-going addiction recovery. This is a merit-based scholarship of up to $5,000 awarded each year by Alliance for Housing and Healing, in conjunction with the Best in Drag Show. The award is paid directly to the winner’s accredited educational institution to help cover the costs of tuition, fees, books, and supplies. The award may be paid in established increments. The winner also receives referral services and other support that encourages a continuing recovery and future success.

Candidates for the Patrick Rush Service Award should be:

  • HIV+, proof of diagnosis will be requested.
  • Enrolled in a post-secondary (after high school)  education program at an accredited institution. This includes two-year colleges, four-year colleges, post graduate programs, and vocational programs.
  • Be recovering from an addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. Able to document participation in a recovery program for at least one year prior to this application. Recovery status during this award period will be monitored.
  • A resident of Los Angeles County.

Applications for the 2017 Award must be received by 5pm on September 15th, 2017. The award will be presented at the Best in Drag Show on October 8th, 2017.
